Island News is published in part by Island Press, a division Hearst Magazines, Inc. The first issue was released on November. 24, 1931. The title was changed to the Stroller’s Weekly. It was later changed to the Island News Professional and Douglas Island News. H. B. Selby & E. S. Stevens edited the issue. The name was not changed until March 3, 1933, when the final edition was published.
Island News Professional brought several new writers to Alaska to write articles about the business environment in the islands and in the surrounding areas. It also featured travel and news columns and mining reports, an article on Kenai Fjords National Park and an island weather report. A calendar of the cultural life of the island as well as mining and wildlife reports were also included. A significant addition was an obituary from the local area. Island News Professional was primarily an online publication, but it also featured pages for businesses. The pages were divided into two sections that included the Commercial Business section, which dealt with the business owners and their companies; and the Employment and Training section, which was designed to inform readers of local job openings. The business section was created to provide advertisements and details of job openings. The section for employment included a classified ad listing all kinds of jobs available which included fishing, construction, general contractoring, cleaning, landscaping and other trades. There are also the listings of employers seeking workers as well as a directory of phone numbers with the names and numbers of businesses.
The Kenai Peninsula News was published by Island News Digest, a periodical that also featured local content. It was mostly focused on the Kenai Peninsula and reported on everything from travel and tourism to arts and culture. Unlike the Peninsula News, which was mostly focused on business it was the Kenai Digest was entirely designed to be a service that was aimed at consumers. It contained features on family activities, education and sports, as well as culture, and local government.
Other topics included health, culture, education and religion, as well as technology, labor business owners, the production of radio and television. There was a lot of news about the Peninsula and the Kenai Peninsula. Many people were proud in having a knowledgeable and objective source of business news. The insightful reports that Peninsula News provided were appreciated by many business owners as well as others.
